11/11/16: Thanksgiving Eve blues party features 6 bands at Ground Zero

Annual Sunflower River Blues Fest preview set Nov. 23 at Ground Zero

CLARKSDALE – Six dynamic blues bands will be featured Thanksgiving Eve at Ground Zero in a musical extravaganza previewing the 30th anniversary of the Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival in August 2017.

“Although this event has become a Thanksgiving tradition for many years, it is especially significant and historic because of the three decades our organization will be observing August 11, 12, and 13, 2017,” commented Melvita Tillis Presley and John Sherman, festival co-chairs.

“It’s great entertainment for family, visitors, and college students at home during the holidays. We appreciate Bill Luckett and the GZBC staff for their hospitality, and for this opportunity to help keep our festival free,” they continued.

Performing will be Super Chikan Johnson, Big T Williams, Heavy Suga’ and the Sweet Tones, Razorblade, David Dunavant, and Robert Eskew.

The Sunflower River Blues Association is a registered non-profit organization, and admission to the three-day August festival is free and open to the public. The festival is staged entirely by volunteers who are 50 percent African-American and 50 percent Caucasian.

In 2012 on its 25th anniversary, festival was honored with its own Blues Trail marker located on the festival site at the foot of John Lee Hooker Lane.
